NORMANDY HONOR ISLAND

Size: >1 acre

Location: A small traffic island located at the intersection of Normandy Drive and Guam Avenue in Normain Heights

Features: The park, conceived in the late 1940’s, initially included an engraved stone as a memorial to a soldier who had died during World War II. In 1997, four shells were obtained from the South Bend Regional Airport's Military Honor Park and placed at the site to replace the engraved stone, which had been broken. In 2000, the park was reconstructed using the same shell materials from 1997. The shells were mounted in cement blocks for stability and painted all black with gold tips. The color scheme chosen for the shells is symbolic of a “live shell”.
