The Department of Planning and Development is responsible for all aspects of city planning within the City of Mishawaka. This department is also responsible for Economic Development and Redevelopment, as well as land use and comprehensive planning, project development coordination, growth management and zoning administration. The department serves as the staff for the City of Mishawaka Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals and the Historic Preservation Commission. On a daily basis, the department is responsible for the issuance of improvement location permits for the construction or modification of signs, fences, sheds, decks, garages and houses.
The Building Department has also joined forces with the Planning Department. They can now work together more efficiently to provide the best possible results for our city. This aspect of the department has the responsibility of issuing and tracking all building permits, including electric permits, plumbing permits, HVAC permits, and other miscellaneous permits. In addition, all new construction projects that are being built within the City are inspected, all Adult Care Homes are inspected yearly.
