The Mishawaka Commission on the Status of Women, established
by Ordinance Number 1957 in 1976, brings women into "full
and equal partnership in the life of the community."
The purpose of the commission is to develop recommendations
to eliminate sex discrimination in all spheres of community
life; to develop programs to facilitate this process; and
to develop recommendations for service which will enhance
the role of women and assist them in making maximum contributions
to the world around them. The Commission will serve to inform all
citizens of Mishawaka of their basic rights and opportunities
and help them to develop their capacities and aspirations to the fullest.
Committees:
Human Rights - acts as a clearing house and coordinating
agency concerning actual discrimination in practice.
Legislative - keeps the Commission advised of current
legislation of particular interest to women and considers
if action needs to be taken at all levels of government.
Social Services - reviews and strengthens all services
available to women to enable them to make their full contribution
through their homes, jobs and community life.
Community Relations - is to educate and inform the
public on the status women through the media and public
meetings.
The MCSW meets the fourth Thursday of each month, September
through May, at 7:00 pm in the Library at Battell Center and is
open to the public.
